Spaced Repetition

Learn how Wöör uses spaced repetition to help you remember vocabulary more effectively over time

Wöör uses spaced repetition to help you remember vocabulary more effectively over time. Instead of reviewing words in a random order or cramming everything at once, spaced repetition shows you each word right before you're likely to forget it — so you can strengthen memory without wasting time.

What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a learning method that spreads out review sessions at increasing intervals. Each time you recall a word correctly, the delay before seeing it again becomes longer. This mimics how memory works — frequent early repetition builds familiarity, while spaced reviews reinforce long-term retention.

How Wöör uses spaced repetition

In Wöör, spaced repetition is built into your learning flow automatically:

  • As you complete exercises and remember words, they move through six exercise groups:
    • Familiar → Know → Know well → Refined → Confident → Mastered

  • The further a word moves, the longer the cooldown before it appears again:
    • No cooldown for early groups
    • Later groups unlock after 3, 7, or 15 days
  • Wöör selects the right words at the right time based on your past performance — you don’t need to configure anything

This helps you focus on what needs review, without forgetting the words you've already learned.

Why it works

Spaced repetition works better than reviewing everything every day. It helps you:

  • Strengthen memory by practicing just before forgetting
  • Focus your time on words that need attention
  • Build confidence and fluency over time
  • Learn efficiently — especially when preparing for exams or mastering professional vocabulary

Where you see it in Wöör

  • Review groups and deck charts show which stage your words are in
  • Cooldowns between later groups help space reviews for long-term memory
  • Your daily exercises include the right mix of new, weak, and overdue words

How it compares to other apps

  • Wöör: Spaced repetition is fully automatic and tied to exact word meanings; cooldowns and progress are visual and structured.
  • Anki: Highly customizable spaced repetition engine, but setup is manual and tied to card design.
  • Quizlet: Offers spaced repetition on paid plans, but not focused on specific meanings or personalized intervals.
  • Vocabulary: No spaced repetition system — focuses on daily word exposure without tracking recall.
  • WordUp: Uses smart review based on memory strength, but doesn’t provide structured progress groups or manual review controls.

Summary: Key points about spaced repetition in Wöör

  • Adjusts automatically based on how well you know each meaning
  • Includes built-in cooldowns between review stages
